Due to the suburban nature of SCU and the overwhelming amount of infrastructure and information in public transportation, many students prefer personal vehicles and rideshare apps to get around the San Jose/Santa Clara area. This is not sustainable for a variety of reasons. First, parking spaces are dwindling due to campus expansion. In addition, SCU aims to be a sustainable campus, and the large number of cars conflict with that goal. Lastly, less affluent members of the SCU community are often excluded because of their inability to afford ride shares or personal vehicles.
The Associated Student Government conducted a survey about public transportation in the area and received almost 20% undergrad participation, revealing an interest and openness to utilizing public transportation. PTHub addresses SCU students’ number one public transit deterrent: complexity and inconvenience. In an attempt to convince the university to subsidize unlimited transit programs, Public Transit Hub aims to build a ridership and portray to the school board that students are interested and will readily use public transportation when it’s made easy for them.
